Last night while scrolling through facebook I came across a link to my friend Sam’s blog, it was a guest post by our mutual friend Melissa. The post was about online friendships and touched base on my friendship that I have developed with these two ladies. This post nearly brought me to tears as I do consider these two ladies very close and special friends. We may not text, e-mail or call but we communicate through facebook and our blogs and sometimes even twitter. I know that when times are rough these two ladies are always there to pick me up and dust me off. These two ladies have been some of my biggest cheerleaders on this WLS journey and I owe a lot of my success to them! I love you both like sisters!
In other news… As you may recall in my previous post I indicated that I was going to start using MFP again. I started the other day but then got busy and completely forgot! Yesterday however I made a point to log everything that went into my mouth and here are the results:
I ended the day with 947 Calories and 73 grams of Protein. I was actually shocked to see that I only took in 947 calories, I was full and satisfied throughout the day so I thought I was ingesting more calories than I was. Guess it goes to show when you feed yourself healthy foods it keeps you full longer. Please note that this screen shot does not show the calories earned by exercise! Also, I didn’t have thousand island dressing but rather a homemade dressing which we figured would equal about the same in calories and fat.
One thing that cracked me up from reporting on MFP yesterday was this:
Me, not eat enough calories?! LOL!
I definitely need to work on my numbers though. I’d like to be closer to the 1200 calories/day and see my protein closer to 100g/day also. In addition, I’d like to see the carbs and sugar come down a bit. Sugar may be tough though as the majority of it comes from my milk and protein shake which I cannot eliminate from my diet. And before you go rattling off protein shakes that have a lower sugar content I will state that after two years plus of protein shakes I’ve tried just about every single one on the market and Click is the only one (excluding a Whole Foods one) that I can stomach. And since I drink a protein shake daily and have to sip it rather than down it in one gulp, I’m going to drink one that I enjoy.
Anyway, one observation from yesterday and the weekend that helped me feel fuller longer was not drinking with my meals. As a RNY WLS post-op drinking with our meals is a big no-no! I knew exactly what it does but yet, I still did it. Not sure why, maybe because it was a habit pre-op (always had to have a big glass of milk with dinner) or maybe because I hate when my mouth is hot from food or for those times when I forget to chew properly and I get that stuck feeling. For whatever reason I would always have a small sip with my meals. It wasn’t until last week when I stumbled across this video by Rob that it made perfect sense as to why I should not be drinking with my meals. I’m a visual person so seeing this made complete sense and opened my eyes!
If you’re a WLS post-op and you drink with your meals I highly recommend that you watch this video:
That’s it for today! It’s pouring here so I’m going to try to stay focused and not let boredom take over and allow me to mindlessly stuff my face. I’m thinking as long as I keep water nearby I should be good!
Have a FANTASTIC day everyone!

I try to eat about 1200 cals a day also (I use caloriecount.about.com tho tried MFP and just didn’t care for it but love the flexibility of CC in regards to entering amounts of food, it depends but you can choose to enter most foods by serving, tbsp. cups, grams, etc. so many ways to track your food… love their smartphone app also) that is funny that it said “too low” in regards to cals. I wish some of these online trackers would ALLOW for a post-bariatric patient to customize their plan according to a bariatric one. CC will only allow users to to go as low as 1200 to be “safe” but it doesn’t work if you are a bariatric patient!
Just a question (not being critical) but WHY do you HAVE to have a protein shake? My surgeon’s office is very strict that we are not to have shakes after 6 weeks post-op, so I’m just curious. I enjoy a shake quite often but I can get the same amount of protein from a meal that I can from a shake. So I just wondered…sorry if you’ve covered it before and I missed it!
Thanks for the comment Sheila! I’ll have to check into CC! As far as protein shakes go. I cannot stomach food in the morning, I’ve tried so many different items for breakfast and they sit in my stomach like a rock and make me feel ill for hours! Doesn’t matter if it’s an egg, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. my pouch just doesn’t like food. The only alternative to help me get through that and to meet my protein needs is a protein shake made with milk which ends up being about 27g of protein to start my day off. I was concerned about this but my surgeon and NUT both said it was ok seeing I have a hard time eating in the morning.
Oooh, I get it now. Well, this is all totally depends on your taste, and you might have tried these before without success, but since you like Click, I’m going to assume you like coffee. I make this shake (used to make it all the time when I was rushing out the door to get to work at 7am!!) but now I just make it as a treat.

I don’t do the individual coffee tubes anymore, I graduated right on up to a big ole canister of the decaf coffee (the reason I drink decaf …er MOSTLY decaf is even tho the link between uclers and caffeine is unproven I don’t want to take chances since my stomach is 85% of what it used to be, and getting an extreme ulcer can sometimes lead to removing part of the stomach, I don’t have much left to lose in that case!) Anyway, the premier protein shake (vanilla) is the bomb when I drink it this way. It reminds me of Click with less sugar, carbs and caffeine.
That does look delicious.. will have to look into it.. maybe with the other stuff added I’ll be able to stomach the protein!
Unfortunately my gag reflexes kick in with most protein drinks
Trust me I understand drinking mostly decaf coffee! I’ve had two major ulcer issues in the last year. Both times contributed to drinking regular coffee! I had another one begin to develop right after the holidays but thankfully I know how they feel when they are starting off and was able to figure out I was drinking more than my far share of coffee! I have meds on hand for when they develop and also know that if I catch it early enough I can stop it from getting bad. THANKFULLY my Click doesn’t seem to trigger them just regular coffee!
I also start the day with a protein shake (most of the time). I just tried Click this week and I totally get why people love it! It’s wonderful. I wish it had a bit more protein (I was getting 30 grams from my egg white protein with added coffee crystals), but the taste is delicious!
Hi Erin! I get 27g with my morning Click! I make mine with Organic Fat Free milk
Christina,
Thanks for friending me on MFP. My name is Debra I am 57 and had RNY in October 2012. I have lost almost 73 pounds so far and when I am not at the gym I spend a lot of time on my computer reading hints and tips on how to make this WLS work for me. I found your blog and last night read every post from beginning to end. I have been inspired by you and the fact that although you have had your good eating days and bad you have still manage to get your weight down.
I worry that I have to be perfect all the time. I have not had any of my “frankenstein” food like pizza or ice cream etc. I know the day will come when I will have these things and I am worried that I will fail after that. Your blog has made me see that you can eat Peanut Butter M&M and live to tell the tale. Thank you so much. I will continue to follow your and hope to be part of your WLS circle of friends. Deb
Thank you for following my blog and taking the time to write such a sweet comment! Congrats on your success thus far!
